A Painted House

John Grisham

3.6 AVERAGE

I am not much of a Grisham fan. This is only the third Grisham book I have read. While this was certainly the best one, it wasn't great for me. The first quarter of the book felt very mechanical. The narrative did improve as the book went on but by the end I felt next to nothing for the characters. In fact, I felt rather hollow and empty by the end. I guess I wanted something more from this one and just never got it, or perhaps I had much higher hopes that were never fulfilled. I probably won't read another Grisham novel.
lighthearted relaxing medium-paced

There was a lot going on in this book. I don't have a lot to say about it except that the title seems very clever. I don't know if I've ever read a book with the narrator being only 7 years old before this one.

Great book

I remembered that I really liked this book when it first came out but I couldn't remember anything about the story. I'm glad I read it again. I really like reading about Luke and the crazy adventures he goes on. What a story.

For such strong writing packed with so much going on, this book left me feeling unsatisfied. It couldn’t decide between being a scandalous murder mystery or a quiet nostalgic memoir.

No lawyers at all in this story. A touching tale of an interesting family.

I was never interested in reading a John Grisham novel, not my particular taste, but I kept hearing that this was his foray into literary fiction and that it was great! So I gave this book a try and am pleased I did. It is well written. It's told completely from the voice of a 7 year old boy, and he pulls it off well to portray the complexity of many of the adults' lives around him, as well as the difficulty of living as cotton farmers in Arkansas in 1952. It also describes the lives of the towns people, sharecroppers, and the Hill people and Mexicans, who come to help pick for short times. It was interesting to fall into this different world, but there are events all through the story that move things along. I learned a lot and enjoyed this tale, which feels quieter than the events that unfold because it is tempered through the lens of a 7 yr. old.
