Whew. Finally! Took me FOREVER to get through this one. Sweet story with a happy ending. I'm glad to move on, though.
medium-paced
Any book that can evoke actual anxiety while I'm reading it deserves 5 stars, tbh. The book takes a little while to pick up, but in the meantime, it's interesting and a bit charming to experience rural Arkansas through the innocence of a 7-year-old boy. Once the conflict started to get going, I was hooked. I was glancing ahead through the pages to see what Hank would do next because oh, he's a troublemaker that one. I got actually nervous at Hank's first conflict with Cowboy. I felt Luke's anticipation and excitement every time he encountered Tally. Really excellent characters all around.
To be honest, not a whole lot happened in terms of plot. The Chandlers hire some help to pick cotton, and that's what takes place during most of the book. But it's the unique characters, appropriately timed storytelling, and plethora of secrets that come about as a result of bringing on the help that makes the book fascinating. To be honest, I got a little frustrated that Luke witnessed all these things he was not meant to see and resolved to keep all of them a secret. I wanted to see what other characters would say if he unloaded his burdens on them, but it didn't really happen. At least not until the end, and even then I didn't really get the reactions I wanted.
Great characters and great storytelling never left me bored, always kept my interest, and made me anxious to see how conflicts would evolve. Excellent read overall.

Picked it up at a yard sale . Overall I enjoyed it. Easy read. Kept me interested. 7 yo narrator seemed more like. 13 year old, which bothered me the whole time.
3.5* A good story. I just wish it had a bit more climactic parts. It was a little one toned.
