For 90% of this book, there is very little action and yet I was tense reading the entire thing. I think the author took some liberty with the number of suicides per year that are accomplished in this forest, but that is of very little consequence to the ultimate story. This is based a real place and there are signs all over it apparently requesting that individual think about their friend and family before doing anything. There are also suicide prevention officers who walk around the forest and talk with people who are alone or appear distressed to help prevent suicides. NYT did an informative article about it here:

I enjoyed the very bleak ending of this book.

Les sebevrahů - Aokigahara... K této knize se vracím již podruhé, po jejím rereadingu, přečtení i ostatních autorových knih, a celkovém uvážení, však její hodnocení, přeci jen o něco snižuji.
Příběh Aokigahary, tedy "moře stromů", je sám o sobě zajímavý, a je jedním z těch, které mě zaujaly už před vydáním této knihy. A tak jsem samozřejmě, nemohla odolat.
Jeremy Batesovi se nedá upřít, že i jemu se ho podařilo vykreslit poutavě, i když tak trochu v duchu záhady Blair Witch, ale proč by vlastně ne. Atmosféra je plná napětí, vztahových zvratů i odhalených tajemství. V tomto případě na zajímavosti příběhu neubírá ani to, že autor v napjatých chvílích, odbíhá od děje k dřívějším osobním sporům a vzpomínkám, jednotlivých postav. Což u jeho ostatních knih, dokáže atmosféru příběhů, celkem spolehlivě zničit.
Co však této knize musím vytknout, je samotný závěr. Za mě by bylo příběh lepší ukončit v okamžiku, kdy se tato možnost přirozeně naskytne. V takovém případě, bych knihu ještě neváhala, hodnotit plným počtem hvězd.

To, co následuje po nalezení budovy hlídače, by se sice v rámci hodně velkého nadhledu, dalo snad ještě i přijmout, avšak konečná záchrana, "jeden proti všem", po několika denním hladovění, nedostatku vody, souboru úrazů a několikerém pobodání, se však už ocitá skutečně hodně za hranicí, a jedná se o výkon, který by mohl i Superman závidět.gumbeauxroux's review against another edition

Great read for a murder-mystery fan!
This book piqued my interest because of my love for true crime and all things related to murder and death. I love a good read in the fictitious realm, but have never really dipped into mysteries. This is one of my first ones, and lately I’ve been obsessing over Aokigahara. After the first few lines I was hooked, and I couldn’t give it a rest after that. The author really brought each character to life and painted the imagery for my mind’s eye with his beautiful, dark and descriptive wording. If you want a good scare while reading on the edge of your seat, hold on to your hat for this carefully researched and wonderfully crafted novel.
