It was a story that kept you on your toes and very creepy many times throughout the book! Probably would not have chosen other than it was a book club choice.

Effectively creepy. Didnt love the narrator. Hated the young Japanese character. Overall, good story that doesnt end how you would expect.

Suicide Forest was not the book that I was hoping it would be. The characters were all so unlikable, unmemorable, juvenile, and ill-prepared. The flashbacks into Ethan's life only seemed to distract from the main story line rather than add depth. Finally, the ending felt rushed and, to an extent, predictable.

I honestly don't even care about writing a review for this book but wanted to post a warning that this gross ass book mentions the hard n-word - freaking twice. It was so unprompted and so unwarranted, I couldn't stomach it. Its not an accident either, the overall book has undercurrents of racist dog-whistling. HARD PASS.

Two begrudging stars

So... this is a book that we read. This review contains spoilers.

The book starts slow, with characters that are mostly flat, despite attempts at character development. Then it goes completely off the rails in a bizarre fashion, with an ending to the epilogue that cements every eye rolling, head scratching moment experienced in the head of this narcissistic narrator.

1) The main character is unlikable. Every time there started to be something resembling growth... he would backtrack. ETA spoiler: ALSO HE'S LIVED IN JAPAN FOR FOUR YEARS AND HE DOESN'T SPEAK JAPANESE?!
2) The similes are RIDICULOUS, most definitely not in a good way.
3) The discovery of what's happening is just bizarre, which coincide with the addition of some racist tropes.
4) *spoiler* the final act involved way too much about rape and assault. No trigger warning and, while not going into detail about what was happening in the act itself, it sure was brought up A LOT and not in ways that were necessary for the progression of the story.
5) No spoiler about the ending in the epilogue, but it just cemented how terrible Ethan is. He is literally the worst.

Two stars because I did finish it. Thank you, sunk cost fallacy.

I really disliked the characterization of the person in the US military, and the protagonist. I nearly quit reading this book and put it on my "didn't finish, don't read shelf," but about at the halfway point, the book took a turn for the better. The action picked up, the suspense increased, and suddenly I was intersted. I liked the twist near the end.
