Ugh!! Even for Dickens this story was long, dreary and drug out.
And at the end I still find a single reason for the story or the title.
Complete garbage.

I'm not buying that ending, Chuck, but you being you, I enjoyed myself, as usual.

This was much drier that previous works by Dickens that I've read. It lacked the attention grabbing details, and thus I was bored most of the way through. So far my least favorite by this author.

This will not go down as one of my favorite Dickens. While I liked the theme of the ‘battle of life’ being fought silently, some of the battle metaphors seemed overdone. There's nothing especially memorable about the characters, except for the servant Clemency, and the two sisters are annoying in their perfection. The debunking of the life-philosophies of the three older male characters was okay, except that much of the action happened 'off-stage'. The dialogue shines: I was happy –and relieved -- to be reading those exchanges, even that of the sisters.

Interesting little story about two sisters and their loves. It didn't have a strong plot or make a lot of sense as to the moral of the story. But it had a lot of Dickens flair in it and his excellent and amusing perceptions and characterizations of people.
emotional slow-paced

A fairly enjoyable short read although I did get a little muddled at the ending.
