Hazel and Josh knew each other in college. When they run into each other at a barbecue, Hazel knows that Josh is destined to be her best friend. As the two get closer, they begin to set each other up on double dates - and the more their feelings for each other grow, the harder they try to set the other up. Because, reasons.
This book wasn't really what I was expecting. My selfish heart really has a soft spot for long-time best friends who have no idea they are in love with each other, and this doesn't fit that trope as well as some other books I love. I wish our characters had a bit more history to their relationship on top of Hazel having embarrassed herself a bit on front of Josh in school 7 years prior. That said, I loved their banter, their chemistry, their romantic journey, and the plot was super fun. There was a trope there at the end I usually despise, but it wasn't too unpalatable here, though I still wasn't a fan.
I can't decide if I liked Hazel's character or not. I love how unapologetic she was about herself, and yet, she still read a bit manic-pixie-dream girl to me. I do love that she was aware of how peculiar she was, and how that for into the struggles of her and Josh's romance. It made her feel more real.
Josh was such a dream-boat! A man with humour who loves his mom, cooks, is a family man and a serial monogamist? Those exist??
Definitely a fun read.
