Hideously boring and overly stylized in a way I found unrealistic and grating.

A thoughtful, well researched novel with sprinkles of folklore and a lot of history and character, written like poetry.

Beautifully written book with a compelling premise and a deep commitment to storytelling.

Loved the writing, but couldn’t follow it at times. The pacing and the structure worked against it in my opinion, led to things feeling a bit disjointed.

A lyrical story about grief, belonging, complicated and layered familial love, and the menacing and relentless impact of colonialism.  The characters and themes of this book will stick with me.  This novel has a strong sense of place - I loved the descriptions of Cape Town and the South African countryside.
