Wow! That was such an inspiring and powerful journey. I really enjoyed following the protagonist Aminata from her childhood on, born in Bayou, traveling all around the world to find peace or at least a better life. I could learn much more about the history of slavery as well as the meaning of life and what we should long for.

This story was well- written. I must admit, that it is probably the best female pov I haver ever read  (written by a man). Even though it contained topics such as rape, giving birth and menstruation.

However I highly recommend it to readers who are interested in the meaning of kindness, humanity and resilience.

This one is long and took me awhile! It's a great audiobook, though, and the narrator does an excellent job! Highly recommend!

I borrowed this from my high school library in the morning and finished it before leaving school. I didn't have many friends. Good book though.

This book was a wonderful read. It was sad, moving and painful at times but overall left me feeling hopeful, inspired and strangely thankful.I admired Aminata's resilience, pride and strength throughout the story. She is now definitely one of my favorite literary female characters.
Unfortunately, the author failed to develop the other characters in the book as well as he did Aminata Diallo. I felt the other characters could have used a bit more attention, especially Fanta. I also appreciate the author taking the time in the last few chapters to explain to readers facts from fiction in his story. Overall, it was quite splendid.

One of the best historical fiction books I have read in a long time! Amazing insights into the life of a young girl caught up in the slave trade.

Heel indrukwekkend verhaal

Absolutely Amazing! I couldn't put it down. It taught me a lot, some things which I had already heard but not connect to, and understood in an emotional, human to human level. It was very sad at times but it also highlighted resilience, courage, and humanity.
Also, the 95 year old white woman I was looking after this morning said that when she read Laurence Hill helped her "learn about the differences between black people and white people", and how "people would say things to black people to hurt them."
I would give six stars if I could...
