I think I like the movie better. There are some funny parts, but overall this book is kinda dull and Andy complains a lot.

In picking up this book, I was hoping to have an easy entertaining read to accompany me on plane trips. Instead, I found it especially hard to read and frighteningly dull.

The chapters are all the same -- essentially Andrea describes how much she hates her boss, meanwhile racking up on designer clothing and smoking cigarettes. Character development is almost non-existent, and the little development that Andrea gains actually makes you like her less.

On the side, there are some smaller plot lines that are fairly interesting/entertaining. Unfortunately, the author fails to develop these plot lines as if they were never written into the book to begin with.

I was not expecting Pulitzer Prize winning work here, but definitely one of my least favorite books.

Like many people, I watched this iconic movie when I was pretty young and loved it. The story was perfected by the sophisticated manner of the characters, the frustrations of adult life, and the realistic humor behind starting a career. And the book is just the same!
The story is fantastic and so relatable, especially if you have worked beneath another person. However, Lauren Weisberg describes wonderfully what it is like to live In a large city under a strong businesswoman, not having a life to oneself and trying to succeed in today's economy. Yet, the great struggles that her character experiences are supported by so much triumph.
I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of a lengthy and entertaining read.
The only discretion I will give is that the story is very detailed and seems tedious to read at times. The book is essentially a narrative of every day for the main character. While it is very entertaining, it can also seem to drag on at times. But don't let this deter you!

Not a great read, but just good enough to make you want to finish the book.

In this novel, Lauren Weisberger shows the progress of Andrea in her first post-college job, as the assistant to the famous Miranda Priestly at the prestigious fashion magazine Runway. But unfortunately, Miranda is not necessarily the best boss to be working for. She has unrealistic demands that MUST be met, and all of Andrea’s coworkers are shallow and have unhealthy views on life. Overtime, the pressures of the job crack down on Andrea, and she slowly begins to lose her best friend, boyfriend, and eventually family. She has to decide if it is really worth it to give up her soul and humanity just to please her demanding and evil boss (hence “The Devil” that wears Prada), or should she stay true to herself and her passion for writing.

The idea for this novel seems entertaining, and when you first begin to read it, it seems like it will be a witty and entertaining book. But as I continued to read Weisberger’s work, it just seemed to drag on and on and on. Honestly, I get the point that Andrea is under a lot of pressure, and her job is basically killing her. But after almost 400 pages of hearing her complain, it gets so depressing! She’s always acting like she never has a choice and she’s being forced to work for ridiculous Miranda Priestly, but it seemed pretty obvious to me that she could’ve left. There are so many times when Andrea realizes she is changing and becoming fake and she does’t do anything about it- SO ANNOYING! And then she just goes on and continues ranting about hating the fact she has no time for her boyfriend or friends. She always gives the excuse that she has “a dream job that million girls will die for” and it will be the liaison to her job as a writer, but let’s be honest, in the real world no realistic person would go through what she did. There are always other opportunities and ways to get to your goal.

Another factor that irked me was how materialistic and fake everyone was. Who knows, it might really be like that in the fashion industry, but as I was reading how all the employees would starve themselves, and were always so self-absorbed, it got super annoying. And the fact that Andrea would change herself to fit into society was upsetting. Yes, in the end it turned out for the good, but all the harm she went through to reach that point was unnecessary. The only real reason I finished the novel was to see how she ended up…which I suppose was a pretty satisfying ending. But all in all, I feel like the book was annoying. It dragged out, and in my point of view, it was really repetitive.

I give this novel 2 out of 5 stars, because it did have some funny points and at first it was pretty interesting. There was an interesting love interest, and it was a good idea for a plot. Overall, I think the book was just too monotonous and annoying to call it a great read.

One of those rare cases where the movie was so much better than the book. Andy comes off as dumb, vain and not at all the smart, carefree girl as portrayed in the movie. Everyone seems to love Miranda, brags about her all the time and even Emily seems nicer? The whole thing was not what I expected. Watch the movie, skip the book…

Entertaining but also a lot of offhand racism and body shaming that’s pretty glaring now. Loved all the smoking though.

I did not like this book. The movie was way better.

A splendid chick-lit read.

Better than the movie. But what book isn't?

One of the VERY rare and few occurrences where I loved the movie and hated the book.
