By chapter 8, I could hardly put this book down! It was a compelling story with engaging characters. The characters made it gripping to keep reading to understand motives and try to guess what might happen next. However, I found the ending to be a bit unresolved and a hair disappointing. Upon further reflection too, I believe Bennett touched on a number of great themes but, unfortunately many of them were not developed to their fullest potential in this book. I enjoyed the book enough but not enough that I will be re-reading it or recommending it to everyone I know.

Really enjoyed this! Family drama, trans people, even some theater, what’s not to love! Honestly the race and colorism stuff was maybe a little hard to wrap my head around but very interesting and the story definitely pulled me along!

I honestly don’t know I feel about this book. I really really enjoyed the beginning but the ending feels like it just left me hanging idk

When a book is super hyped I'm always a bit warry coming into it but this book (!!!) man it deserves all the hype!! I did not want to put this book down; I kept turning the pages because I wanted to know what happened to Stella and Desiree (I actually stayed up late to finish the last 30 pages because I just needed to know what happened to everyone).

Also, the secondary characters in this were so flushed out and I really ended up loving all of them. I was going to try and pick a favourite but honestly they all have a piece of my heart. Early, Reese and Jude are all delightful and I love them so much. And can we talk about the fact that there's a trans character in this??!!! I was so surprised and happy (especially because spoiler: they have a happy ending which I was so nervous they wouldn't).

Overall, if you're looking for a readable, accessible book that talks about identity and connection I would highly recommend this!

Searching for identity can last for a lifetime or maybe generations.
It definitely deserves 5 stars, but some parts were too long.
