The narrator Toru reminded me so much of Holden Caufield even though I haven’t read Catcher in the Rye since I was 13. He is similarly wondering aimlessly through life after the traumatic loss of someone he cared for, struggling to form real connections with the people around him. He thinks he’s in love with Naoko because she reminds him of a life he can no longer go back to and it takes him a long, long time to really understand that. I didn’t like Catcher in the Rye all that much as a tween, but I quite liked Toru’s journey.
Can’t give 5 starts because I did think some of the writing choices re:the intimacy in the book were very bizarre.

What an odd and deeply tragic book. Beautiful explorations of grief and I absolutely loved the writing style-- makes me want to read more Murakami.
