If I had the option, I'd give it a 3.5. I liked it okay, but it was pretty bleak.

I quite enjoy different takes on the whole superhero genre; especially stories where the villains win, or where good heroes are corrupted by their power - and the consequences that follow. That's why I am a big fan of such series as DC Injustice, or Marvel Zombies. The End League fits into the same category.

After a cataclysmic event nearly destroys the earth, the super heroes are largely overwhelmed and destroyed, and the villians take over the remains of the earth. The few surviving heroes form the End League and are try to set things right, while dealing with the futility of their efforts and the secrets that lurk beneath their heroic personas.

It is a dark and violent story that, while not set in the DC or Marvel universes, heavily borrows character ideas from them. But the fact that it isn't set in one of those established brand universes is what hurt the experience a little. Those 'end times' type stories just seem more enjoyable when the characters are familiar, and you know more about their individual histories and motivations. It makes their struggles more interesting and meaningful. The End League doesn't have that history - it starts us right in the apocalypse, and without having stories of these heroes and villains from before the end of the world happened, it's a little harder to be invested. It does somewhat curb this by, as I mentioned before, heavily borrowing character ideas from those more recognized stories - so there is at least a slight sense of familiarity.

But ultimately I did enjoy it. The art is nice, and the story is suitably interesting and bleak. I probably would have rated it a 3.5 or 4, except that it is let down by a confusing and chaotic ending. Honestly, the ending is just a mess.
