Nancy Willard's version of Beauty and the Beast is told in a picture book format, but would be most appropriate for older readers between ten and twelve. It features heavy text and black and white wood cut illustrations that may not appeal to young readers.
In Willard's version, Beauty and her two greedy sisters move to the woods after their father loses his money. When Beauty's father picks a rose from the Beast's garden, the Beast demands payment in death. Beauty returns to the Beast's magical mansion in place of her father. The Beast falls in love with her and Beauty slowly recognizes his kindness. She returns home to care for her ailing father, but the thought of the Beast dying of grief brings her back to his mansion. Beauty's love transforms him into a handsome gentleman. The two live with her father in the mansion. Her greedy and selfish sisters transform into log holders on the hearth.

Awesome. Loved the changing of the tale to 1900 New York. Kept to the original tale and made subtle changes.
