It wasn't that bad and I can see why it is a fairly famous book but it felt repetitive and kind of longer that it should be while in the same time it didn't focus on some themes it mentioned.

I didn't like this book for the same reason that I didn't like The Great Gatsby. The characters are all self-absorbed on an epic scale. Nobody even realizes what a manipulative bastard Duroy is until it's too late. But I couldn't feel sorry for any of them because to some extent, they were ALL pulling the same things he was--he was just better at it. The realization that there have always been & probably always will be people who have no qualms about who they step on to get to the top was a little depressing.

love maupassant's style (read the original french) and after reading many of his short stories i wanted to try one of his novels. i get his point with bel-ami but in the end, i don't think i really care about the story (yes, yes, corruption is everywhere, we cannot trust mainstream media, and so on) even though i'm aware it was p bold for its time, and the way the women are written drives me a liiiiittle bit crazy. kudos to the writing itself though, i love his descriptions and the vocabulary he employs. the form definitely wins over the substance for me and is delightful enough for me to settle on a 3 BUT i might lower it a bit in the future
