Stroud is a brilliant writer and his prose flows so smoothly you’ll happily drown in it. The world his characters move through is only somewhat familiar and the world-building is complex and intriguing. I love these characters and am moving by straight on to the sequel!

Very good bad characters. Scary. Why am I so judgemental about the bad guys? Because if they aren’t scary enough it is harder to care about the good kids trying to get away from them. And what an amazing world post some cataclysm of unknown origin. Scarlett is so gutsy you have to admire her. Probably so much more to say about the clever things the author is saying about outsiders and people who are different and what we will do to defend our own small ordinary corner. But I need time and space to process it. And to be honest someone more articulate to say it. Just know that I really enjoyed reading this all the way through.
