This could easily be a phenomenal movie. Jonathan Stroud has such a way with words and settings that it's so easy to imagine his books as little movies in my mind.
Easily a 5 out of 5 stars because it's such a unique mashup of so many things and genres. It's a dystopian western with zombies and religious fanatics and psychics and mutant animals. It's almost TOO many things but somehow just right. Maybe its because I'm such a big Jonathan Stroud fan, but maybe its because he's damn good.
I loved Scarlett. She's sassy, stubborn, and all too clever. She's a brilliant lead and I feel like in order for her to grow as a character, she needed Albert. And Albert was hands down my favorite. I love his optimism and hope and his effect on Scarlett and those around him. He's just a ray of sunshine that needs to be protected, even though he can clearly protect himself. I love that he learned just as much from Scarlett as Scarlett learned from him.
And a quick shout out to Joe and Ettie for being great side characters. I'm so curious to see if they decide to stay where they're at or go with Scarlett and Albert.
I was thinking back to [b:Vial of Tears|56639070|Vial of Tears|Cristin Bishara|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1625225570l/56639070._SX50_.jpg|85402847] in which I complained that the whole book was just traveling. This one is also ALL TRAVEL but there's something very different about the two and it's hard to put it into words. 'Vial of Tears' treated travel as sort of fade to blacks - we're here, something happens, we're on the move, suddenly we're here and something happens, then we're in another place and something happens - there's so much travel but not much spent on the traveling scenes. Whereas in this, we see basically every waking minute of travel and we see how their relationships develop because of the shit they get into (and get themselves out of). And the same with [b:The Lord of the Rings|33|The Lord of the Rings|J.R.R. Tolkien|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566425108l/33._SX50_.jpg|3462456], it's mostly travel, but since we get to travel WITH the characters, we feel for them deeper.

I could honestly read another 20 books about their adventures, and there IS A SECOND BOOK COMING OUT!!! 4.5 // Oh my gosh??? To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t expecting to like this book NEARLY this much, because I just didn’t know what to expect from the synopsis, and I wasn’t sure it was something I’d enjoy. But I DO enjoy Johnathan Stroud’s writing, so I gave it a try.
Let me tell you, I got attached. Albert is definitely my favorite character by FAR— I love how he was written and especially his growth!! I also love how his relationship with Scarlett developed— I was pretty darn hooked. I gasped a lot, I smiled a lot… I had a very good time!!
I enjoyed the worldbuilding but I do hope it’s expanded upon further! I am so intrigued by the mechanics of the Faith Houses, etc…
