Thank you to Forever, Grand Central Publishing, and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own!

A chance encounter finds dreamy artist Rooney and straight-laced scientist Jack on the same path and after spending a romantic night together, they think that memory is all they have. However, Rooney ends up being selected as the artist in residence at NASA for her annoymous work as Red String Girl and Jack just so happens to be the artist liason. The two work side by side and try to decide if their paths reconverging is science based by choice or a twist of fate.

I thought this was cute! I did enjoy the opposites attract nature of Rooney and Jack. However, I found myself getting bored and skimming at times. I almost think the NASA/science aspects of this book got too bogged down for me and I found myself spacing out. I do subscribe to the red string of fate theory though so maybe that's why I struggled with the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of belief. I also found this to be a bit too slow burn for me and I couldn't really wrap my head around the subplot of her mom and the Baby Being Born video.

I did appreciate the Asian American representation and I look forward to checking out Lauren's other books. I love that she seems to be really inspired by Chinese culture and I enjoyed the art aspect connecting with the red string of fate! This was a fun book nonetheless but I'm not sure how memorable it'll be after a bit.

When I heard Lauren Kung Jessen had another book coming out, I ran to Netgalley and was thrilled to have gotten it! And it did not disappoint!!

This book is full of so many cute moments. I loved the juxtaposition between Roony being so whimsical and Jack being so logical. I will admit occasionally I just wanted him to just chill and believe in fate lol, but also that was the driving conflict of the novel, so very much necessary.

There were so many moments where I could see the stars aligning, and each one was so satisfying.

A contemporary romance set at Nasa was super interesting and felt like a peak behind somewhere I personally don't know much about. Plus, I loved that it was a different setting from most romances, it's was a nice change. The balance between fate and science made me think on a bunch of things like fate vs. choice in terms of romance and talent. What really is fate, and what is choice?

Overall, it was a super fun romance with late nights in NYC and Nasa gardens, with great character development and story ARC.

Thank you to Lauren Kung Jessen, Forever and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Oh to have the joy and faith of Rooney Something Gao! This was a quick read and very enjoyable. I will be excited to read more from Lauren Kung Jessen. I learn a lot of Chinese and Japanese traditions as well as mythologies and it was so intriguing. It’s a story that makes you want to appreciate the small things in life and treasure the decisions/fate that makes your life what it is.

It just doesn't really work for me. Things feel overwrought, and I find Rooney a bit ridiculous.

“You ever feel like you come across opportunities, or events, or people in your life because you’re meant to?”

This is a romance about fate. How fate exists, but also how we can create our own. How we get to choose, even if it is “meant to be”.

Read this book if you like:

i really want to like this one since the premise about two adults with contradicting belief about how the universe works is my kind of jam but i had a hard time distinguishing the voice between Rooney and Jack even if the book is narrated with their respective POVs

it was actually an anticipated 2024 book since i enjoyed Lunar Love last year but i'm still glad that i finished it this time. 2.5stars

4.5 stars. Half star off because of the puns. They were cute to a level and then I got annoyed hahaha

Otherwise this book is gorgeously sweet. How do we find love? By fate? By a series of choices? Or by something in between?

After a fated night together in New York Jack and Rooney can’t find each other again, even though they both spend hours trying to. Fate (FATE) has other ideas though and brings them together again when they have both lost hope. What ensues is a sweet love story where the characters challenge each others perspectives and beliefs on love and life.

Read for:

This comes out this week! Make sure to snag it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC
