I feel that the plot/idea was cute, and I was so excited to read it. But I didn’t really connect with the characters, nor did I feel like Rooney/Jack’s chemistry was really there.
Real talk, Red String Theory didn’t grab me until the halfway point. In their first meeting, Rooney was a bit too manic pixie dream girl and Jack was too curmudgeon for me. I felt like I was getting hit over the head with the sunny/grumpy trope. Then they reconnect and it’s exciting. How do they interact after all this time? What do they bring out in each other? How do they help each other grow? I went from pushing through to genuine excitement to see where it would go.
From there, things were decently good. Sometimes it was Jack who felt like the hopeless romantic and Rooney was the realist. Other times, Rooney was the typical sunshine girl and Jack was the science guy. Most of the time, I was learning about the galaxy from Jack. It was clear the author did research on space and I love how it was intertwined with Rooney’s interest in fate and chinese lore. Did you know sunsets on Mars are blue :)
Two notable supporting cast members are Rooney’s mom and Jack’s gong-gong. It was great seeing them interact with our main leads. It helped to round out their characters and show development over time. It’s also always heartwarming to see familial love (along with strong friendships) in romance books.
All in all, I would describe this as a cute, cozy novel. I enjoyed it.

Warning: This book may lead to craving ice cream. 3.5 rounded up. My love for Serendipity is endless and all the little nods to the movie in this book were the best treat. With plenty of laugh out loud moments I read this with a permanent smile on my face. Also absolutely loved loved loved the little cameos from LL characters. Just a delight and warm read from beginning to end.

Maybe I'm a hopeless romantic!! this book made me cried like a child. Loving the love story of Rooney and Jack.
I loved Lauren Kung Jessen’s debut last year, Lunar Love. Red String Theory is similarly sweet and lovely, weaving in fate, tradition, and science in a beautiful love story between Rooney and Jack. I inhaled this book and adored it!
“Our lips touch gently, like a whisper. It lasts two seconds, maybe three, but it’s all I need to know that this man is meant to be in my life more than just tonight.”
Red String Theory will make you look at the night sky differently, want to eat dumplings after midnight, and pursue your own creativity. Kudos to Lauren for a stellar followup to her debut.
Plus, Olivia and Bennett from Lunar Love make an appearance - that part was one of my favorites!
I received an advanced reading copy, receipt of which did not impact my review.
