I really wanted to give this book four stars!
The scenes between Jack and Rooney were so swoony and romantic and I loved their sweet banter. I also loved the construct of why they spent so much time together, I think it worked and was sweet. I think a few things that knocked this book down for me was the author forcing them to fall in love within two months even though the book had an entire year to have a more realistic timeline! I thought the scene where they admitted they loved each other was SO underwhelming especially for such a formerly swoony couple (and honestly a bit undeserved) and the third act breakup made partial sense but mostly sucked. I also thought the theme/message of the book hit you over the head a bit at the end - like we get it, fate and choice can coexist, but I felt like the author was shoving it down our throats a bit.
I would still recommend this book, I don’t think it did any worse on realistic relationship development/third act breakup than any other romance, I was just hoping for more.

This was such a cute read. I love the idea. It gives off modern Serendipity vibes - so much so that I gasped when it referenced the film. I’m a sucker for integrating STEM into a romance AND having sexual tension without explicit spice. It was slightly predictable, and had it not been it would verge on 5 stars. One of my favorite romance reads of the year thus far.

I see myself in the main characters Rooney and Jack, one believing in the Universe and Fate, but the latter a planner, believing in free will and our sequential choices to get us to where we are today. I have pondered upon both these beliefs many times in my life. Who says we can't have many beliefs, at the end of the day, we are human, complex creatures who are contradictory and are in a constant state of change.
The red string adds a bit of magic and romance into our lives but also, Love is an ACTION and a CHOICE. I'd like to believe who I am with now I was destined to meet with because the signs are there, then again if the person was different at the end of my string I would choose the person I'm with now over and over again because it's not him at the end of the red string.
Overall I loved this read, especially since this was the first romance novel I've gotten into for a while. Will definitely be one of my favourites I will come back to one day.
4.5/5
