probably the most fast-paced book so far.. definitely action-packed and very readable. but also idk why but in this series her writing occasionally gets repetitive. the narration will say something just for the character to repeat it in a dialogue. not sure if she's worried we're not following.

Pretty disappointing compared to the first two books in the series. Floundered around a lot with slow paced storylines with boring/unloveable characters, rather than staying with the main characters of the previous books. Picked up a bit right at the end. Also didn’t like how the Rapskal and Thymara stuff occurred. Yuck. Will keep reading though, hopefully the next book is easier to get into. I think you can tell I didn’t enjoy this one as much by how slowly I read it compared to the first two

Getting into the rhythm of these books. I think this one is setting up for some big events in the last installment.

another short but enjoyable installment in the Rain Wilds. our dragons have finally made it to Kelsringa… but on the wrong side of the river. their story line was a little slow as it explores the “what now?” of the keepers journey. but even when it doesn’t feel like the plot is moving all that much, the character work is so well done I don’t even care. the real star of the show was the expanded universe we got here - Hest in Bingtown, Selden in ??? and my queen Malta in Cassarick, and even a taste of the politics in Chalaced. there is a lot of set up for the final book here, but all the threads that were teased have me very excited to pick up the next one!

I really felt that this was the "middle" book of this particular series.

There seems to be a lot of prep and setup for the next book; and catching the plot up for specific characters (Hest Finbok especially), in order to align their timelines for the coming finale.

I didn't find this as engrossing as the previous in the series (or others that Hobb has written), and I think it says something when I thought that the Bird Keeper intrigue (all of about 20 pages, spread throughout) was the most interesting part of this book.

Having said that, Hobb's prose is always a delight to read, even if the story drags a bit.
