Glimpses of Spenser's past periodically show up in many of Parker's novels, but like Susan, we fans craved more. This short novel delivers that and then some.

I'm not really a Spenser fan, so I didn't understand the context of the story. Spenser is telling Susan (his girlfriend? wife?) a story about his youth. He was raised by his father and two uncles, as his mother was dead. They taught him the values he still believes in. At the age of 14, he saved Jeannie from her abusive father, who died chasing them. Then he outfoxes a bully who preys on Mexican kids. He's way too perfect.

This book is a prequel to all of the Spenser books. It is actually classified as Young Adult. It is a short, easy read. I read it in 1 and a half days. Spenser recalls his days as a youth is a series of conversations w. Susan, his lover.

I listened to the audio. I found the whole book and experience irritating. The book must have been written by a 6th grader. I said, she said, he said, I said is the primary dialogue.

It was a fun quick read but I didn't get any more about the character that I couldn't find in the book series.

Loved it! Nothing really earth shattering but it was a great story of how Spenser became Spenser.

I hadn’t read a Spenser novel in a long time. This brief look at his teen years reminded me why I always liked the character. Too bad Parker died before going any further into the “Young Spenser” series.

Good idea gone boring. Didn't add anything to the Spenser character or shed any light on his background. So what was the point?
