Love the book but a disappointing ending, just left you hanging
I don't really know how to rate this. 3.5, I guess. I expected a little bit more from it, but I did like it. Even though the characters are...well, kind of idiotic.
I want to see the movie.
I want to see the movie.

maybe rereading this was a bad idea. maybe once was enough. one simply cannot handle all the feels TWICE.

I read this after I saw the movie. I really enjoyed both. The movie closely follows the book until the end -- then it veers off. I think the book ending is way more realistic (although unhappier) than the movie ending. And the movie irritated me by not casting an average-enough looking teen girl -- in the book, the girl is definitely more awkward and average looking than the actress Shailene Woodley. And in the book, his ex-girlfriend is described as fat -- but a perfect, curvy, appealing kind of fat. Of course in the movie, his ex-girlfriend is the stereotypical skinny pretty blonde. But that has nothing to do with the book, which was good.
While decently written, there was absolutely nothing enjoyable about this book
Uh, this book is entertaining... what with all the snappy dialogue and jokes. But it's also disturbing. It was hard for me to read about Sutter's alcoholism. Even though it's so central to the story, the weight of the issue is barely acknowledged and there are few real consequences. I guess that happens in real life? Do functionally alcoholic teenagers really drive drunk that much? Scary!
I was almost immediately queasy each time I chose to hang out with deluded, self-destructive Sutter Keely, but he was a multi-layered, complex, authentic person. An excellent, sad character study.

It's more like I was daydreaming when the Supreme Being told me what I should do with my life, and it's too late to ask what it was.
-----
"You're not a bad guy, Sutter. You're a good guy. You just don't have a real firm grasp on the concept of consequences."
-----
To hell with tomorrow. To hell with all problems and barriers. Nothing matters but the Spectacular Now.
-----
The thought does cross my mind that I could slip and end up cracking my head on the pavement just short of the pool, but if you're always going to worry about minor drawbacks, then you'll never accomplish anything.

Subtle but alarming. Definitely thought-provoking but I can't figure out if I enjoyed it or not. Didn't really care for the characters but they did make me think...
I no longer want to see the movie. There are factual errors (you just can't fit that much alcohol in a flask). Plus, I didn't like the ending. It made me sad. That last part is my own issue.
