I'll be completely honest... I hate dnf-ing a book. It pains me a little every time, because it means that I just couldn't do it even though I tried so hard.
Now, I'm telling you this, because I really liked the book, but I couldn't get past the writing style. That was really the only thing. It's just the way the story was written out.
It's like this, have you ever listened to your friend tell you a story about something that happened in their day? They go on and on, dragging out parts that really didn't matter, stopping about halfway on a thought and talking about something completely different that doesn't relate to the story whatsoever?
That is The Spectacular Now. You don't think about it when your friend is talking like a conversation, because your friend isn't a writer that used more poetic language. When reading a book, you expect the more higher level language.
Tim Tharp gets points for originality, but The Spectacular Now just isn't the book for me personally. It could be perfect for someone else, but for me we just had to break up only about 30% of the way. Our relationship just wasn't meant to be.

This was really a strange book for me. I read it because I found it on a list of books about to be released as movies. It is basically the story of an alcoholic, life of the party but depressed teenager and it starts really fluffy and light and I didn't really care for the style much but as the book went on, even though the style didn't change at all, the style grew on me and I got sucked in. This thing is...the more sucked into the story you get, the sadder and sadder and more depressing the story becomes. It is, IMO, a unique book and quite effective, but deceptively and surprisingly sad..painful and disconcerting to read. Stayed up way too late last night to finish and when I realized how few pages were left and that the story was not going to resolve the way you except, I was really quite shaken. I recommend this book but if the movie is at all well done, it will be an uncomfortable movie to watch perhaps even more than this was an uncomfortable book to read.
Is it wrong from me to say that I think the movie is better than the book? It was still really good though but I like the movie ending better
I've seen a lot of reviews that have been disappointed with the ending, however I think it rounds off nicely.
Sutter is a very realistic character and I kinda love him. His journey is somewhat relatable. Other coming of age stories usually cover the grounds of a teen trying to find themselves. In this book however, Sutter is pretty well aware of his character, it makes a nice change.
Overall, I'd recommend this book. Its funny and heart breaking but very easy to read, would recommend for a holiday read :)

Enjoyed this quick read, I gotta say the movie casting couldn't have been more spot on. Miles Teller and Sutter Keely, hand in hand. I enjoyed the anti-capitalistic critiques between Sutter and his friend Ricky that were sprinkled here and there. Sutter's perspective on how he was going to get with Aimee just to help her get confidence and then leave her, it was lowkey hoed but it did make me laugh. The book was funny, has a variety of layers/undertones, and it hit on the teenage perspective well. I remember hating how open ended the movie was when I had first watched it years ago, there is no real resolve, just loose ends. Which is the same for the book. However, I found it suiting this time around. The movie really made me hate Sutter, but the book did it for me.
ESCRIBE REVIEWS, MELISSA.

I can't say I hated this book because I finished it, but I certainly did not like it. I kept waiting for some redeeming element of the book - not even of the characters - and nothing ever came.
There is nothing likeable about the main character and the writing is sincerely not good; the entire book felt like a middle-aged man trying to force himself into the language of an adolescent, but seeming to have forgotten (or never known) how adolescents communicate.
I find it hard to say who this book could be a good fit for because nothing sticks out as likeable. I can only imagine the film must be better, given the hype this story once held.
