I keep thinking about this book. I originally rated it as 4 stars, because at the end I was sad it didn't turn out the way it was expected. But ultimately this book is a life lesson, sometimes things don't turn out how you expect, or even how you want.

I came back today to give it the rating it deserves, because although it seems light and innocent on the surface.... it stuck with you and it is buried in my brain in a haunting way. Of all the books I've read in the past few years, this is the one that has really stuck with me.

It took me nearly a hundred pages to get into this book and there wasn't really much a plot, but it was better than I expected for a book about a raging teenage alcoholic.

definitely not what i was expecting. Although the male voice of Sutter is greatly achieved Aimee is very much neglected as a profound character and their whole relationship and book had an air of wrongness that left a bad taste after all.

An interesting, unique narrative voice, but the story had fizzled by the end, winding down in all the predictable locations.

eta: I watched the movie, it was so not good. So much of Sutter is internal that on screen he just looks like a single layer, jerk.

4.25, 4.5?

This book! When I started it I wasn't sure I'd like it, but it grew on me really quickly. I didn't know this book existed until I saw a trailer for the movie, and how could I not try a YA book connected to a Shailene Woodley movie? I had to do it.

Sutter is a supremely screwed up and incredibly likable guy, and I'm pretty sure I knew at least one Sutter in high school. He is lost, but he sees the beauty in everything around him. He likes girls, all girls, regardless of size or shape.

I really recommend giving this book a try.

Quotes:

I'm going to grab hold of this night and crack it open, eat the fruit right out of the middle, and throw away the rind.

Besides, it doesn't matter if it's real. It never does with dreams. They aren't anything anyway but lifesavers to cling to so you don't drown. Life is an ocean, and everyone's hanging on to some kind of dream to keep afloat.

We're not the Faster-than-the-Speed-of-Light Generation anymore. We're not even the Next-New-Thing Generation. We're the Soon-to-be-Obsolete Kids, and we've crowded in here to hide from the future and the past. We know what's up - the future looms straight ahead like a black wrought-iron gate and the past is charging after us like a badass Doberman, only this one doesn't have any letup in him.

I strongly disliked the main protagonist: Sutter. The ending gave me no closure, the only character I did like was Aimee and I genuinely got bored reading this.

This one was difficult for me. I saw the movie before reading the book and now I'm bummed at how much underutilized potential there is in these characters. The film built backgrounds and layers and complexities, the book hints at them. If I hadn't seen the movie and experienced Sutter I wouldn't have enjoyed the book as much.
