Writing this in Starbuck's after a near miss with a taxi. I have just finished reading Fight Club and will rent the video to watch on Friday evening. The 'Starbucks' connection is that one gets demolished at the end of 'Fight Club' the film, though not the book which has a slightly darker ending. People die. Nothing ends happily ever after, well not as happily as in the film where Tyler and Marla, hand in hand, watch the high-rises collapse. All very Ayn Rand, it occurs to me suddenly, though it hadn’t up until now.
Getting the message "men bad" from this book seems as wrong as thinking it's "let's blow shit up." Yes, there are issues, many of which revolve around overblown competitiveness under capitalism, social isolation, and violence - so why would you try to solve those issues by essentially turning them into a straw-man of themselves? I'm all for demolishing Star$ucks but more for using independent cafes and local chains instead. And I only want to boycott McDos because arson is illegal. You do not beat the beast by becoming what it eats. I think that's the message, and there is no point, either, berating people for not understanding that - if the whole damned message is 'help people rather than attacking them.'

Palahniuk's writing has always been hauntingly beautiful, I love the style of the disjointed storytelling and dark nihilism. You know it's a powerful novel when you can feel your gut twisting as the plot deepens

I think the thing that most strikes me about this book is how popular it is. All the quotes from it, like it's something profound or something. It's really not. It's actually quite disturbing.

I liked the writing style with the repeated sentence patterns and the whole ordeal surrounding the insomnia and support groups etc. but generally…this book wasn’t for me. Good cover though! (I’ll need to stop reading books bc I liked the title/cover)
