Favorite stories were: The Finkelstein 5, The Era, The Hospital Where, Zimmer Land, The Lion & the Spider, Thorugh the Flash.
Really didn't like: Things My Mother Said, Lark Street, Light Spitter.
The finkelstein 5 was brutal. The Era was thoughtful. THe Hospital Where was clever. Zimmer Land was challenging (in a good way). The Lion & the Spider was moving. Through the Flash was touching.
Things My Mother Said was Confusing. Lark Street and Light Spitter were kind of yikes.
I really liked this collection and I would love to read more short stories by POC authors. Highly recommend.

Fantastic book. As with all short story collections, quality varies, but there were non I'd call bad. Stand-outs were absolutely the first and last stories, 'Finkelstein 5' and 'Through the Flash', as well as the titular story, 'Friday Black'.
Astonishing and magical and incredibly smart. A completely refreshing and new approach to classic writing and one of the best collections of stories I have ever read.

As hit or miss as any short story collection. Personally the misses outweighed the hits. I enjoyed 'The Era' and 'Through The Flash.' I also enjoyed 'Friday Black,' but the two follow up retail vignettes seemed redundant and uninteresting. There were a couple of problematic stories. 'Lark Street' is most definitely pro-forced-birth and if anyone tries to explain otherwise they are either being willfully ignorant or assuming that the person they're trying to convince is a complete idiot. 'Light Spitter' felt to me like it wanted one of the two main characters to feel sorry for the man who had murdered her in cold blood and that left me feeling a little 'ick.' I'm at least willing to admit that might not have been the intent of the piece. The rest of the stories were fine, although the tone of a few of them slipped a bit out of satire and into farce which kind of made them cut a bit less sharply than I thought they should do considering the weight of their subject matter.
I could really only get into about 2 of the stories and felt like I was forcing myself to like/read the other ones.
