Generally, I liked this book. It’s a lovely story about overcoming hardships and confronting your greatest fears. What happens to Holly is one of my greatest fears (among drowning and murderers) and the concept of a loved one reaching out beyond the grave is very comforting. The premise is wonderful. After reading some other reviews, I’m not sure how accurate this book is at depicting grief. So beware on that front.
I didn’t like how much was going on. I felt as though there were scenes that could have been left out and that those scenes rambled a little bit. There were also a lot of characters and at times it was hard for me to keep them all straight. I try to rate books as objectively as I can (isn’t that the only way it’s fair?) but I also didn’t like the style of the writing, leading to the lower 3/5 stars instead of 4/5. It felt vanilla and cliche.
I don’t want to compare this book to the movie, which I have watched many times not knowing it was based on a book since my mom watched it a lot when I was growing up. Aside from the names of some characters and the idea that Gerry is continuing to be with her after he’s gone, there’s not tooooo much that happens the same way. In one way, the conciseness of the movie makes it better, but since the two stories are kind of different, it just feels unfair to pit them against each other.
I would recommend this book if you want a tear jerker. I cried quite a few times and had to put it down for a few minutes to go give my boyfriend a hug in the other room. It is certainly a beautiful love story, if nothing else. A story of love between soulmates, between family, and with oneself.

Holly and Gerry loved each other but now Gerry is gone and Holly has to face life without him. This book follows the year following Gerry's death and the letters that he has written to her to help guide her. It is a touching story.
I don't say this often, but I enjoyed the movie more.
