I expected really great things from this book. What I got was a bunch of mixed feelings.
There was a lot of potential in the story for some deep, complex characters. The only one that the potential was even slightly realized in was Teren. Raffaele had his moments, as well, but there is a lot more to be explored there.
Adelina, the main character, was a disappointment. She's supposed to have so much darkness and is supposed to be so complex, but she came across as whiny. I felt zero connection to her whatsoever. Honestly, I kind of wanted her to die and for Lu to start over with Violetta or someone else. And Enzo was too static of a character for me to really care much about anyway.
I kept reading despite my lack of interest in the characters because the world was interesting and I was waiting for that one big moment where everything would come together. That moment didn't really come. I found myself still indifferent by the end of the book.
It's a good thing she included the prologue because that's really the only thing that has me curious about the next book. Especially after the last part. You'll know what I'm talking about when you get to the last part. I was just sitting there thinking "what's the point of keeping the story going? What are they possibly going to do now?" I think she did "it" (again, you'll know what "it" I'm talking about") mostly for shock factor.
All that being said, I still consider it a decent read. It was quick and the writing was smooth, if a bit lacking in flair. The world-building was rather well done. I still think there is a lot of potential for this to be a decent series. Lu just needs to step everything up a notch. I'm so close to liking this book, but now I just feel indifferent.
I gave it three stars because I'm an optimistic person when it was probably closer to a two star read. This is why goodreads needs half stars. Solidly 2.5 stars.

i really enjoyed it, i can't wait for the next book for more teren, also i loved the epilogue with maeve and i can't wait to see more of her, she's so interesting.

I love Adelina, she’s an incredibly compelling and somewhat relatable main character. She’s incredibly flawed and it’s refreshing!
Enzo sucks,I hope he stays dead but the ending foreshadowed him being resurrected . I hope Adelina kills him again, he’s an awful love interest!

This book was amazing! It had so many twists, and really pulled me into the book. I think its very interesting how the reader sees the book through the eyes of a character torn by darkness and the light that is being snuffed out. This book make you wonder which side is to be trusted, since everything is clouded by darkness, and no one truly wins anything.
