damn. i wanna snuggle up and live inside the ribcage of this prose

Disappointed - the first book and the novella were so good but this book made no damn sense. I’m fine with weird but I could not follow what was going on.

very similar to the film UPSTREAM COLOR in its approach to narrative delivery (ie. imagery without context); pretty neat if completely alienating at times. vandermeer is a compelling enough writer to get away with the more esoteric elements, but it really only works if the reader suspends their impulse to *get it.* as someone who struggles with understanding shit, this was easy for me to do.

With Dead Astronauts, VanderMeer achieved the artistic distinction of becoming too famous to be told "no" by his editor.
challenging mysterious reflective

this is beautiful and deliciously written, like most of vandermeer's stuff. the last third is one of my favorite things I've read this year i think; it was captivating.
this book is very atmospheric, abstract at times, gut wrenchingly sad... i loved it.

Inchohate jerk off. Do Not Bother.    [ just to be clear, I read BORNE twice, LOVED IT,  and the second time was immediately before reading this.] I have so many negative things to say. Absolutely hated this book. His writing is excellen but it almost seems like one of those projects that you had at University where the professor slaps their forehead and gives you a pass because clearly you're trying but in fact it's an incomprehensible shit mess.
