Could not get into this one. It was like the author would start a sentence and then a computer with the thesaurus turned up to 11 would finish it off. Just incomprehensible

OMFG that was amazing. I devoured it. I loved it. I read into the night until my eyes gave out. This is so much more of an experience than your average book. I was sucked in by the gorgeous yet strikingly unusual prose and compelled through the book by a hunger to consume it whole. It is perfect for those seeking an unusual reading experience.
(I would NOT recommend it on audio as there are key visual elements to the prose.)

This was... a weird one. It felt more like bonus “behind the scenes” content for Borne than it did a narrative in its own right — almost a scrapbook kind of a feel, with strange mismatched patches of disconnected narrative trying to patch themselves back into a whole. In some places it worked. In other places, less so.
Nabokov said there are no good readers, only good rereaders. Dead Astronauts could not be a better example. I could not read this book in bite sizes and when I finished, I knew I wouldn’t get everything Vandermeer intended us to get unless I read it again. Someday... someday...
I loved this book. Imagine Murakami and Angela Carter spending a long night on a range of hard drugs and yet the product is as elegant as it is merciless.
I won’t get into spoilers because if anyone ever reads this review, (and you’ve already read Borne) I would love if you would try this strange, strange book.

for some reason my brain couldn't focus on his writing style in this one, it feels wildly different from the rest of his writing (for the most part/what I've seen) and I just can't get into it :( I'll for sure come back though at some point to finish it!
I love the worlds VanderMeer creates, they fascinatingly deconstruct our ideas of how nature works. The Southern Reach Trilogy was captivating but this one was a bit of a grind. The storylines felt like a massively wound bundle of ear bud cables stuffed in my pocket and as soon as I was able to unwind them and listen, the music inside skipped or repeated incessantly. Not sure I really got the point. Nonetheless, it was an interesting if not somewhat frustrating adventure.
