I had to DNF this book - my brain struggled to keep up with the twisty strangeness of the 'Southern Reach Trilogy' and enjoyed the mind-bending in 'Borne'...but after the first section of 'Dead Astronauts', I was lost and found it hard to focus, the surreal meandering too much.

I decided rather than continue to struggle, I would just admit defeat.

I'm so conflicted.

There were a lot of beautiful chapters, specifically the ending, and the atmosphere created in the book is eerie. There are a lot of interesting philosophical questions posed too. A lot of pointless repetition too.

The structure is odd and I don't know if it works. The execution could have been better with a different narrative structure. The scope of the plot is so different from the first as well.

All in all, a bizarre book. More so than I was expecting.

An admirable addition to the series, I just think there was more potential that could have been fulfilled.

Very trippy. Excellent read.
