I’m heartbroken.

And what about us? We aren't allowed to have an opinion! My, my, aren't they progressive! Not have an opinion! People can tell you to shut up, but they can't keep you from having an opinion. You can't forbid someone to have an opinion, no matter how young they are!"

This is where Mother and I differ greatly. Her advice in the face of melancholy is: ‘Think about all the suffering in the world and be thankful you’re not part of it.’ My advice is: ‘Go outside, to the country, enjoy the sun and all nature has to offer. Go outside and try to recapture the happiness within yourself; think of all the beauty in yourself and in everything around you and be happy.’
I don’t think Mother’s advice can be right, because what are you supposed to do if you become part of the suffering? You’d be completely lost. On the contrary, beauty remains, even in misfortune

Oh, it's sad, very sad that the old adage has been confirmed for the umpteenth time: what one Christian does is his own responsibility, what one Jew does reflects on all Jews.

The world's been turned upside down. The most decent people are being sent to concentration camps, prisons and lonely cells, while the scum of the earth rules over young and old, rich and poor. One gets caught for black marketeering, another for hiding Jews or other unfortunate souls. Unless you're a Nazi, you don't know what's going to happen to you from one day to the next.

I don't know why it's taken me this long to actually read this whole book, but jeez I'm glad I did finally. The history major in me loved this glimpse into the lives of this normal family during such a terrifying time in history for their people.

Anne is just a normal girl in a lot of ways, but her situation has made her so much wiser and more mature. She's also just really smart and a really good writer. It's gutting because every time you think something like this throughout the book, you remember how her story ends. She talks about how she has these big drama to be a journalist and famous writer and you remember she never gets to do that. She gets frustated with her mom (same, girl) and vows to be a better one, but she never gets that chance. She also shares surprisingly deep thoughts on humanity, the war, antisemitism, and so much more.

ALSO it was always weird to me that this book has so often been banned or challenged, I figured it was just holocaust-denier hogwash. But now that I've read the definitive edition HOLY COW I get it. The first time she mentioned sex or menstruation I was like 😦 and then she mentioned women being attractive and I was just completely gobsmacked. No wonder they didn't want people, especially kids, reading this and what a shame they did that for so many reasons.

Oh, and Selma Blair did such a great job as a narrator!

I enjoyed this book. It was hard at times. I knew how the book ended before I started it while this was the diary of a teenage who wrote about her life.

I wish I had read this book as a teenager. As an adult, I still consider it an essential read, but this is the diary of a teenage girl, with all the moodiness, conflict, and curiosity that entails. Had I read it as a teenager, I feel like it would have resonated with me in a different way.
