Dating Disasters of Emma Nash by Chloe Seager

Six reasons to read Editing Emma:

1) It is so funny! I wasn't expecting it to this extent, and it caught me so unawares that I choked a few times.

2) Through all the humour, the story slips in some great points and good advice that I could have used as a teenager (and may still have use for today).

3) Emma is ridiculous. She's a disaster, pretty much from start to finish, but there is a huge amount of character evolution between those two points. I like that her progress isn't linear; she had setbacks and some lessons need repeating.

4) It is such a quick and easy read. Silly, entertaining, and relaxing, it is also thoroughly enjoyable.

5) This book covers teen sexuality, masturbation, the chaos of navigating dating especially in those early days, and feminism being explored in its variations. It's a lot, and it's all done very well.

6) I love the ending
Spoiler, the big – silent – fight with Gracie and the making up
.

Two drawbacks to Editing Emma:

1) It took me a chapter to get used to the blog post format.

2) It isn't realistic 16-year-old behaviour (I don't think). It isn't designed to be, and it took me a while to get used to that and just go with it.

I would have loved this years ago when series like "Angus, thongs and perfect snogging" were huge, but for me this was unfortuantly a little juvenile. Im not the target audience however, so I can see someone younger appreciating how quirky and angsty this is but for me even though im sure I had a crush on a boy that was very obsessive in my youth too, this felt borderline stalker ish.
also no offence but the audio book narrator - really annoying. she turned me off this a lot where im wondering if I should have physically read this instead.

From the perspective of a teacher: WHERE IS THIS SCHOOL'S BEHAVIOUR POLICY? WHY ARE THEY ALL ON THEIR PHONES IN LESSONS? WHY DON'T THE TEACHERS JUST CONFISCATE THE PHONES?

Also: Emma would be really irritating to teach, what with the constant lateness, chattiness, going-to-the-toilet-to-go-on-the-phone-ness and general on-the-phone-ness.

That said, if the school/teachers had better behaviour management going on, these things probably wouldn't be a problem.

Those observations aside, I loved it!

DNF at 50%. Even my love of epistolary format couldn't save this boring interminable pathetic slog.

The narrative is a diary/blog of the most empty-headed waste-of-space person imaginable. Not for lack of potential, ability or opportunities, but through sheer stubborn disinterest in anything remotely worthwhile. Given the book format, there is no escape from her amoeba-brain pea-sized worldview. I just couldn't stand any more of that.

Hmmmm. I’m a little mixed on this one. I did laugh out loud a few times even though Emma was kind of a tough character to get on board with. I liked her relationships with her friends a lot. Her boy-craziness was understandable, if I put myself back in the shoes of my 16 year old self. The ending was a little abrupt for me though? I think it was probably the right ending, but parts were anticlimactic and predictable as well.
