Good for a palette cleanser, easy beach read. Kind of vapid characters, but what do I expect? Kind of felt a bit YA-ish, which I don't mean to be an insult, but one of the primary characters is just turning 13, and her two sisters really aren't that much older in the scheme of things. A bit predictable, but again, trying to judge this as a beach read, not Dostoyevsky for Pete's sake. First read of Elin Hilderbrand's; would try another but wouldn't strongly seek it out. Don't really feel like putting effort into further review - 3 stars it is.

I’m absolutely shocked at how much I enjoyed this book. It was a little long, but that was my only complaint. I loved the historical fiction aspects of it, as well as the “issues” the characters were facing that went along with it. I’m not an expert, but from what I know about the 1960’s, it was depicted very well and accurately. I don’t know if this book will stick with me forever, but other than the length, I had no complaints which earned it 5 stars.

Also, this is the epitome of don’t judge a book by its cover. Normally I would never read something with such a happy cover, but there is a lot of realistic darkness in this book, which is my favorite.

This was my first Elin Hilderbrand novel. I wasn’t too invested at first, but this book really grew on me near the end! I really loved this book, especially Hilderbrand’s note at the end. I enjoyed watching Jessie mature throughout the story, “...when she looks back on the summer of 1969, she will think: That was the summer I became real. My own real person.”
