Really mindboggling classic. The main character's absolute dullness in experiencing the world penetrates the experience of the story and how the plot develops is interesting.
Good amount of thoughts about a woman's body

I liked the story and writing style, but HATED the way he wrote about women so much it totally offed me off the book. I find the main character kind of annoying the same way I find Kerouac annoying. Seems like the kind of guy that wants everyone to KNOW how nonchalant and unbothered he is.

There’s a scene when he’s in trial and a witness woman comes in the room. The first thing he says is a description of her breasts and lips. I absolutely hated that.

I really enjoyed the simple storytelling in this book but the rest of the plot dragged so much after the first part.
This book gets points for the engaging simple prose, the humor, and how the story unfolds in the first part of the book. It loses points for how the last half of the book totally lost my interest and the way that the book ended.

This was truly the worst book I’ve ever read. Not only was the main character completely insufferable but all the other characters were equally as awful. The idea of the main character being an “ordinary man” is disturbing. Nothing about him is ordinary in my book. The only thing I liked about the book was it’s overall creepy and dark tone. Otherwise I thought it was pointless, there is no development or growth. It was dull and borderline unreadable.

Maybe I just completely missed the mark but I’m 99.9% certain the main character is a psychopath and truly has no emotions. He has no redeeming qualities. Allowing Raymond to do what he did is literally exhibit A.
Also Marie is a complete idiot.

I found myself unable to emotionally connect with the main characters. The Stranger's plot and characters seem to only serve the purpose of demonstrating Albert Camus' arguments in favor of existentialist philosophy. I think this book should have been published as non-fiction so that readers don't have to endure the unbearably unlikeable and sad sack story of Meursault.

  • i feel camus keeps moving back and forward between exploring morality and preaching his own views
  • i feel bored multiple times. many paragraphs are wasted explaining events after events, and background characters that i just dont care about.
  • camus writing of marie is just ew
  • there's a bit of racism spice considering how camus wrote some of the witnesses attempt to convince the juries that the narrator is a kind man, yet the arab witnesses, who saw the fight before, were not called.

The characters are complicated and often not all that likable, but it is valuable to read this one in the context of other works by Camus. The novel is all about the absurdity of this Mersault's life and life in general. It all means nothing and all we have is our own time. I struggle to place it, but it gave me a similar sense as reading O Caledonia by Elspeth Barker and Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. It could be something about the downtrodden main characters who are actors in their own stories, but fail to see the whole pictures and so are swept away, as we often are.
