I don't know, I may bump my star rating up later. This wasn't a bad book -- it wasn't poorly written or anything like that. But it's definitely odd, and not quite like any of Harris' other work I've read (several of the Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Connelly books). It feels a bit unedited or unpolished, which lends it a certain amount of charm, but I don't think I'll be compelled to reread it.

I really enjoyed this book by Ms. Harris. It is a great opening to a new series with many interesting new characters for her to explore.

There were two tie ins to her previous mystery series, and it took me a while to remember who Manfred Bernardo was along with Arthur Smith as it was so long ago that I finished the Harper Connelly and Aurora Teagarden series.

The mystery in this book was ok and I didn't guess "who did it" at all, which is unusual. Honestly, the mystery to me was the secondary story and the primary story was about getting to know these characters. They are all quirky, private and have something to hide. It will be great to find out what each of them is really like.

I was a fan of this show before it got cancelled, normally I’d read the books before watching the show but just ever got to them. It’s so fun to be back with these characters and the books are better. It’s frustrating but I love how it slowly is revealing each characters special qualities.

I was meaning to read this book for a while now and with the TV show soon starting I figured I better get to it. Even though we all know things will most defiantly change in the show.

We also have a buddy read on BookLikes that you can follow with the midnightcrossroadbr tag.

Anyhow, the book was a bit slow but I still enjoyed it but I really hope it will pick up on pace for the next book.

For some reason I thought we would follow Manfred as the main character throughout the book. But we get several point of views from several different people all equally big part of the book.  Also plot wise, we pretty much follow those people throughout the daily lives and what happens. With that we get either a few storylines or none and everything is a bit scrambled together. We kind of getting a bit of everything and it is a bit all over the place at some points of the book.

I did get kind of a Haven feel wit this book. You know freaky small town everyone has a secrets and you have to be in the ‘in’ circle to know it.

Also for a paranormal book I would have liked a little bit more paranormal things happening. Yes we get some but I would have like to see more. Especially from Manfred given the plot and him being psychic. Sometimes they seemed to handle stuff a bit too mundane for being well ….. paranormal.
I did however enjoy the kind of vampires in this book and how they feed..

I also enjoyed the characters and setting is was very well described and made you feel like you are part of the town.
While a bit slow the book did have a nice flow which made it fun and easy to read.

I’m looking forward to book two to see what our townies are up to.

I rate this book 3★

Picked this up when I saw the first trailer for Midnight, Texas - a TV series loosely based on the books. Like with the Sookie Stackhouse books and the True Blood TV-series, the books are slower, not so overwhelmingly overloaded (a reason why I paused True Blood after Season 3, buying the Blu-ray-Sets and having not watched it since). But slower does not necessarily mean bad nor good.
This is set in the same Universe as Sookie, variants of the same creatures and Harper (from another book series) is even once mentioned.
Having watched the first 5 Episodes, the TV-series is again rather overloaded, too much happening in the last episode, and too much at the same time. It looks to me as if they pressed events from this book and the possible next 2-4 in these 5 episodes. Half of it would have been enough for me. Also the constant switching between the different storylines (although happening at the same time) was rather annoying.
In the books the approach is better, switching POV chapter-wise. But also less suspense, and were the TV-Show has too much, this book has more inner monologue and thoughts of the POV-Person, not really much happening. Would have liked a mixture of the TV-Show and the Book, more action, more suspense.
Recommended, 3 solid stars. May be the next books will be better, but as I have read all 4 Harper Connely books, some Sookie Stackhouse and most Aurora Teagarden (sort of like Agatha Christie, but in USA and in our time), I doubt it. That is not bad, if you know what you want and like the world Harris created.

3.5- it was slow, it was not exciting, and yet it was a pleasurable experience. I enjoyed the relaxed small town feel of the story. The pacing was easy, how life happens in a one gas station country town. A place where everybody knows your business and keeps to theirs for the most part. This is the kind of community that reveals their steal bonds in times of trouble. It is also a place where many beings have come to hide away from the outside world. Not much happens no, but the characters introduced were just the way I like them, quirky, magical, nerdy and extremely different, not a "normal" in the bunch.
I enjoyed the previous paranormal mysteries from Ms. Harris and I loved that she brought a few of her old characters into this story and gave us some more, finally, on Manfred. I like her writing it brings me happiness. I will continue the series.
