Ellis Peters

3.5 stars. I really enjoyed Peters's writing in this one, but couldn't overlook the many coincidences that led to the solving of the mystery. That said, I loved meeting
SpoilerHugh Beringar, and wish I'd read this before I read [b:The Sanctuary Sparrow|5972|The Sanctuary Sparrow (Chronicles of Brother Cadfael #7)|Ellis Peters|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1334529633s/5972.jpg|2572362] (since I recognised his name from the latter, I knew he couldn't be the bad guy in this one)
.

I like Brother Cadfael and the period the books are set in, but this one didn't have much of a mystery to it. I felt like one plot thread was dropped and then forgotten.

I'll still read more in the series.

It has probably been more than 25 years since I read the first Brother Cadfael book, and I am glad that I ventured back into the series. This book was a pleasant melding of mystery and history, with the very lovable Cadfael at the center.

2.5*

A real disappointment, especially since I enjoyed the first Brother Cadfael [bc:A Morbid Taste for Bones|321545|A Morbid Taste for Bones (Chronicles of Brother Cadfael, #1)|Ellis Peters|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1296427936s/321545.jpg|2814300] book so much. & such an intriguing premise! A corpse mixed in with the victims of a massacre -awesome idea!

This was a muddled mess and I'm not interested enough to go back to try to figure out where I became
confused. Having

didn't help. This is exactly how I felt reading other books in this series many years ago.

Reading more of this series on hold for now.

Reread.  Nice medieval mystery.

I think highly of this series so far. the writing is beyond capable, the characters are compelling, the historical details are interesting and immersive. I found the romances somewhat pat, although, again, the characters are quite likable.

After Shrewsbury Castle fell in 1138 during the civil war in England between King Stephen and Empress Maud, the ninety-four defenders of the Castle who were loyal to Maud were sentenced to be hanged as traitors to the crown. Brother Cadfael agreed to bury the ninety-four executed men but quickly discovered that were ninety-five bodies awaiting burial and the extra corpse was strangled not hanged. Horrified, Brother Cadfael vowed to identify the murder victim and unmask the killer. An intriguing puzzle and an excellent read.
