4.5

4 hours 24 minutes - When I first read this book, I don't think my heart was in it - I found it a drag to read, reading each page for the sake of it rather than for the enjoyment. I was rather scared this would happen when I reread it for the first time, but no, quite the opposite. I absolutely loved it, it was definitely on par, or even perhaps better than the introduction to the Percy Jackson series. I didn't love the multiple POVs at first but I quickly got used to it and I think it adds to the story. The 3rd person perspective also helps this book feel more serious than the Percy Jackson series, and I found it a lot more intense than these as well. I feel like the ending was slightly disappointing up to the last few pages, as it wound down a lot and felt a little boring in comparison to the rest of the book, but the cliff-hanger about the Greeks and Romans made it better. Can't wait to start the next book!

4.5

re-read 18th February 2023: I lowered the rating to 4.5 stars because I realised there were certain things I didn't like. For example, the way Riordan wrote Piper being Native American felt clumsy and not well done, and I also thought he kind of overdid it with Leo's jokes. Not that he needed to be more serious, that wouldn't have fit, but literally every second sentence out of his mouth was a joke, no matter the situation, and that got tiring after a while. But overall, I still loved this a lot!

re-read 29th October 2016: God, I love this. Especially Leo. Can I keep him?

first read November 2015: I really, really freaking adore this world so much! At the beginning, it was a little difficult to get used to the new set of characters, but all of them are flat-out awesome and fleshed out - it was easy to get attached to them soon. Personally, I wouldn't be able to choose a favorite out of the three!
I did miss Percy, though. I always expected him to show up, but he didn't. But because of that, the end reeeally blew me away! I didn't think that would happen!

I already ordered the next book, but it always takes them about ten days to arrive, so I won't be able to continue right away. Meh. Sometimes it sucks to not have an English bookstore nearby.
