The Body in the Back Garden is a queer cozy mystery set in a small Canadian town. Independent investigative journalist Luke Tremblay is just in Crescent Cove to straighten out his recently diseased aunt’s affairs when he stumbles upon the dead body of a man he recently had an altercation with. Enter the handsome Sergeant Jack Munro, the Canadian Mountie handling the investigation and an old friend of his with an axe to grind. Luke then decides to take matters into his own hands and clear his name.
This is the type of low stakes, cozy book that is just plain comforting to read. Think just a bit queerer, more modern Murder She Wrote or a gay male equivalent to Hallmark’s Mystery Woman. Even with some plot holes, I thought the murder mystery was still well done and interesting enough. Luke was a fun protagonist to follow along as he uses his skills from his background as an investigative journalist to solve the mystery by navigating through the small town gossip and the inevitable quirky townspeople. There’s was also more a suggestion of a romance than an actual romance here, but that was totally enough for me because I was definitely rooting for Luke and Jack to get together. Their banter was fun and the chemistry apparent.
The Body in the Back Garden is a charming cozy murder mystery with a charismatic queer lead. I’d definitely read another installment.
*I received a free ebook copy as part of its book tour.

Quick, fun read with well-drawn characters, believable romance and a mystery that did a good job of keeping me guessing.

Nothing special, but I liked the characters and I'm interested how the plot will develop. Will read the next one in the series for sure!
