  • stumbled upon this book in the library and decided to give it a try
  • really interesting characters. it’s very character driven. i was engaged the whole time. except i didn’t really like any of the characters… they were all weird and annoying
  • affairs :( hate
  • you keep reading because you’re just like…this is so wild i have to know how it ends
  • i felt that some character plotlines were kind of lost? or they had interesting things happening and we never find out how they end up. they just get kind of forgotten or swallowed up by other character lines.

hi hello this is officially a zadie smith fan account <3

i love so many things about this book and her writing in general but what makes it a great 5 star read is the sheer humanity of smith’s characters. stagnant, unrealistic dialogue? not here, thanks. reading this book made me feel like i knew the people on its pages so intimately and it’s so rare (at least in my experience) to have that feeling. even better, every single character is so brilliantly developed that it’s actually a huge amount of fun getting to know each of them individually. if you’re all about people and all of their intricacies, i could not recommend this book enough!

this one took me a bit to get through but really enjoyed the journey the parallels to Howard’s End were fun and the books left me with so much to think about

I have a problem with Zadie Smith and her novels. Part of that problem is that I walk away from these books extremely happy to have gotten to enjoy them. But I have no idea why. I cannot intelligently explain to you why I enjoyed this book. I cannot pinpoint any passages that made me believe that this book was definitely worth the time I spent reading it. But I liked it. A whole lot. I liked it as much as I liked White Teeth. Also a book that I cannot explain why I enjoyed. So don't ask me. It was beautiful. It was about beauty. And sometimes, maybe it's okay not to explain it.

thank you powell's for the half off sale. :)
