It's difficult to rate the book when I have watched and loved the movie many times. The foreknowledge provided by the movie surely took away some of the mystic and mystery while also cluing me in to where some padding could have been trimmed. The writing quality was very good and the vastly different tones and styles Mitchell is able to write in is impressive. I remained primarily interested in the same storylines that I have always liked best in the movie, but did appreciate Zachry's section a little more, especially because the audiobook narrator was excellent (as were the narrators of every other section). I expected to finish the book with a deeper understanding of the story and its nuances. But in actuality, it has made me a tad more impressed by what the film achieved.
I stuck with this for sooo long. I wanted to love it, I wanted something profound. I didn't exactly find it. But for some reason that I still can't discern, I would not allow myself to drop it.

Amazing book. Author is thorough in studying the places and eras in which he is writing. It's sort of like seven books in one. Different dialects are used.
Wow. I read this book about a year ago but only just watched the movie this weekend. BLOWN AWAY. Now I want to go back and read the book all over again! It is a dense and complex book spanning six different "novellas" and hundreds (thousands?) of years. Certain novellas held my attention more strongly than others, but the characters were original and the story lines incredibly imaginative. David Mitchell is basically a genius...and the three directors who came together to make the movie NAILED IT. I never like when books are turned to movies (or I should say, I always prefer the book) but I would sincerely recommend both!
This book made me want to become an archivist. Loved the audiobook.
