This book was a wild ride! I’m so heartbroken and I need the next book immediately. This series has me hooked!

“If you won’t be my friend, you’ll regret being my enemy.”
Although I loved the first one, and this second installment was also very good, there were some issues that I couldn't overlook. Overall, after the events of The Winner's Curse, we have Kestrel navigating the political games and the dangers of the court, as well as Arin trying to rebuild Herran, while still trying to keep the Valorians at bay. There is a tension that hovers over the entire book and leaves the reader feeling uneasy like anything bad could happen at all times the entire time and when things finally explode, you're left reeling and just as destroyed as our mains characters. Kestrel, while smart and a very good strategist, is completely out of her element here and lets herself be caught in something she can't quite get out of. I like that she had to go through this, as much as it pained me in the end, but it was a good way for her character to develop.

I liked the new characters but wanted more of an active role for some of them. And while I love me some angst in my couples, the plot device the author used here not only to keep the two leads apart but to set the whole thing to the end she wanted was just so poor - I hate lack of communication as a way to further things along and delay the couple getting together. It means that the whole plot could have unraveled with one decent conversation and there would be no book afterward. It feels like lazy writing to me and was what bothered me the most here. I get it that there were some trust issues between Arin and Kestrel, justifiably so, but it was stretched out as much as it could until it was just annoying and an obvious plot device. Still, I keep enjoying this story so much and Kestrel & Arin's characters are amazing. They grow a lot during this book and I think it sets the whole mood for the conclusion. It's a good middle book, with a few issues here and there.

Ok so much to process!!! I didn’t like this one as much as the Winner’s Curse but I felt that this book was leading up to the third which I’ve heard is awesome! Such a cliff hanger. Which I hate but I’m on to book three….

AAAAAAGHHHHH

So good!!

Marie Rutkoski upped her fucking game
This book was way better than the first, more politics, more plot, more anGST, ugh, I adored it

This series is amazing. I don't often reread trilogies, but this will be one I do. I cherish these books!

“Sometimes you think you want something,” Arin told him, “when in reality you need to let it go.”

After reading ‘[b:The Winner's Curse|16069030|The Winner's Curse (The Winner's Trilogy, #1)|Marie Rutkoski|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1377023523s/16069030.jpg|21861552]’ I just couldn’t resist to go ahead and read immediately the second book which was a lot better than the first.

In an attempt to save what she loves, Lady Kestrel agrees to marry the Valoria's prince, but that means she must leave everything behind. While she tries to live a luxurious life in a palace full of nobles and guards, Arin on the other side is complete ignorant of the hidden purpose behind the marriage. In a game of secrets and betrayal the two lovers will be tested by the power of their will and their trust which will put themselves in danger.

Kestrel has even worse things to face in this book. But she’s strong and a diplomat, the two things she had to be in this situation and I really admire her for that.

Arin tries to save his people, while he’s watching the girl he cares about slipping away, keeping secrets from him. So his position is not the best but he stays firm in his mission.

One of the many things I loved in this book, besides the character development, is that the writing is so poetic and also so easy for you to read it, even if English in not your native language.
The plot of course couldn’t be any better with some amazing scenes full of agony and action.
And yes, this book was really a struggle for the main two characters and also for me to watch them trying to solve their problems only to create some other problems and get hurt over and over. Their relationship kept me on the edge and I was literally dying when something happened.

If you loved the first book go and read this one, ‘cause you haven’t seen nothing yet.

“Her fierce creature of a mind: sleek and sharp-clawed and utterly unwilling to be caught.”
