All The Lonely People

I enjoyed this book. I really highlighted just how disconnected society is at this time. You can live next door to someone for years and have no insight into who they are. Human connection is important.

After 5.75 hrs on audio, I still had 6.5 to go so I quit.
Why does this seem so long & drawn out?

There’s alot of this story that I enjoyed and appreciated. But I think the overall concept of a space for lonely people and forming a community, i was hoping for more of that. This story is told in dual timeline, sometimes this works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. I did enjoy Hubert and his quirks. But his community just wasn’t quite fleshed out for me.

Just what the doctor ordered. I loved this book because it's not a happily ever after book in the way that everything gets wrapped up tidily. But it is a comforting and encouraging book that I will revisit.

i don’t know how to properly express the bittersweet state this book has left me in after reading the last sentence of the book. i feel like i’m about to throw up

Another enjoyable read from Mike Gayle - this time on the theme of loneliness. Windrush-generation widower Hubert Bird, an 84-year-old man, lives alone in Bromley. He chats on the phone each week to his daughter Rose, but she doesn't live locally and he is estranged from his son. When a young neighbour called Ashleigh calls on Hubert to introduce herself, he is initially wary, not wanting to form a friendship with someone so different from him, but when Ashleigh needs assistance, she calls on Hubert to help, he discovers that with a bit of perseverence, it is possible to find friends when you least expect it...
