Overall a very cute story! I loved the characters and the message this book gives. It took some wild twists that felt a bit much at times.

it took me a little while to get into the book but once i did i loved it, cried so much at the ending, it’s such a resonating book

7/10 : Mike Gayle is a talented author, whose books I’ve enjoyed quite a few of over the years. This one in particular struck a chord, in part due to the job I do {domiciliary carer for the elderly} & in part due to the loneliness created by the pandemic. Protagonist, 84 year old Hubert Bird, living week by week waiting for his daughters phone calls, doesn’t realise quite how lonely he is, until a new next door neighbour arrives at his front door one day. Young, single mum Ashleigh, is new to the area, trying to make friends & is also in need of a favour. All of a sudden, Hubert’s life of routine & practicality takes on more shape, culminating in things he didn’t think possible. Throughout the book, each chapter switching between ‘then’ & ‘now’, we learn Hubert’s history, how as a member of the Windrush generation, he faced overt racism once moving to the UK, but carved himself a new life, with a wife & 2 children. With a resolute, slightly stubborn attitude, & the forming of an unlikely friendship, Hubert’s story is heartwarming & will make you smile. As easy read, with tragic life events adding a bit of a depth to the plot line, I’m glad @bethsbookclub_ picked this for their April read.
