This story was definitely one to surprise me.
I had never read anything other than typical YA and romance, based on high school situations, so reading this book gave me a real view on a different topic.

From the point of view of Esch, a 15 year old girl like myself, I was definitely able to relate to her in some ways. Like the ideas of being naive in situations and relying on the word ‘yes’ before thinking. I’ve always felt as though relating to a character had to matter in ways, because it was the only way you’d be able to feel similar emotions whilst reading. But that’s just my take.

She’s such a strong girl as well, especially at such a young age. Reading in her perspective just felt so real and powerful, knowing that she’d seen and experienced so much in a short lifetime.

Also, the fact that this book revolved around a poverty struck family, engulfed in the disasters of Hurricane Katrina interested me the most, because it’s not a gossip topic or based on a love triangle. It’s real life. People have had to experience that natural disaster, and growing up in a small town in England, I’ve personally never encountered such tragedy. I guess reading about something poetically factual and new just interested me more than hearing about whether or not Bella really fancied Edward more than Jacob.

If anyone is looking for a short but powering read, this is the one to pick up. No disappointment at all.

Salvage the Bones is a powerful story. It is about struggles, both small and large, both overwhelming and overcome, about family, about love and loss. But mostly, it's about living and life, in all its grit and grime, joy and sorrow. As with Sing, Unburied, Sing, we experience many aspects of being poor in the rural south. The story was difficult to read (not because of the writing, but because of the content) but at the same time compelling, inviting the reader to participate in the struggle, to overcome, or just to survive.

I was concerned when I got a few chapters in that this book was going to be unsatisfying. Some books bring you to the end with no resolution of any issues. I get it, that's how life is, but I don't enjoy books like that. I am pleased to say that Salvage the Bones did not disappoint. While there was no neat bow placed on everything - these characters have issues and life circumstance way too deep and complicated for that - I felt that the story was closed in a manner that felt like an end.
