I was so close to DNFing this around 20-25% of the way through. It just didn't grab me at all, and I was still having a hard time getting to know the characters. I kept listening because I didn't have anything else ava lable at the library before catching a bus, and I'm glad I did! I really enjoyed how it all came together. Some parts of this had me grimacing through them, and others had me feeling so much for the characters. It was quite the book!

You can tell this is one of Ward's first novels. It's rough, a lot of the themes and metaphors don't quite cohere, and for a book that is supposed to remind people of Hurricane Katrina, the hurricane feels like an afterthought. This one needed a little more polish to become truly great.

Wasn't in the right head space for something so dark. May take it up again in the future.

Written with incredible vividness, Ward has a truly a unique narrator in Esch. The effortlessness in expressions celebrates the malleability of language. I found myself gasping in awe at some passages. The cost of survival-needs induced by poverty through the loss of affection and hardening of the heart was explored, & depicted through parent-child & familial bonds - also, through the experience of first love. Although the lyricism did at times suspended the flow of the story (i.e. plot), it wasn't highly disruptive & the solid ending more than made-up for it.
