Have not read Dracula and did not want spoilers.
This book sent shivers of excitement and fear down my spine. I’ve never read a book that makes me hold my breath, and be terrified to turn a page. Thrilling until the end.
Story recap:
Sickly child Bram Stroker is confined to his bedroom. His older brother has no time for him, only his sister and nanny visit - when not distracted with the new baby. Upon a particularly bad night of his disease, Bram is about to die. It is with the quick but mysteries actions of his Nanny Ellen Crone that he makes it through the night. Bram finally feels well enough to join the world, but Nanny Ellen disappears into the night. Bram and his sister go off to follow her into the night, but walk into a world of nightmares instead.
As they age Bram denies the events of that night , but his sister won’t let it go. Upon random spotting of their Nanny Ellen the siblings attempt to find her. What they find instead is far darker and more evil than they could ever imagine. Can they find their Nanny Ellen, and can they save their lives and the lives of the ones they love from ... him.
A story of love, for family and for lovers, death, mystery, the occult, and the unknown. Stroker and Barker weave together a twisted, thrilling and shrilling tale of Dracula.
Also, features strong well written female leads. Continues the same feeling of the original Dracula, by being written as a series of letters and diaries.

that was fucking incredible. the best part is when vambery banishes patrick from the house and he's just fucking yeeted out of there. and then vambery tries to do it again to maggie and bram just fucking decks him. insane.
This book was really good. It's written in a very similar style to Dracula and works well as a prequel to Bram Stoker's novel. It makes me want to go and read Dracula once more.
I was gripped by this book at the beginning, the characters all had enormous potential, but by the end I was left a little disappointed. I still enjoyed reading the book and, admittedly, I haven’t read Dracula in awhile, but I don’t know if there was as much creepy suspense as I expected from a modern horror novel and the plot seemed to have some holes and unnecessary parts.
"I am quite convinced that there is no doubt whatsoever that the events here described really took place, however unbelievable and incomprehensible they might appear at first sight."
[Bram Stoker, original unpublished prologue to Dracula]
After darling desi's recommendation last year, this had to make it onto my autumn list. I've always loved "but here's the real story, I'll let you in on the secret truth of the legend" types of retellings and this was exactly that. The spooky atmosphere, especially the descriptions of the dark forest and October winds was wonderfully written and simply sparkled. Secret societies, family secrets, folk legends that might be true, is this character a villain or not?, and lots of chilling moments. The author's note is bloody scary (pun intended). Stoker really believed his legend was true, and was initially tryin to publish it, according to his papers and journals, as a warning and guide to the public. Wild. A little bit gory for me but not really too bad (I could still read it just fine). Overall a great Halloween read!

I liked it, but didn't love it. The premise was interesting but something about it fell short of excellence... maybe it just wasn't scary enough for me. I wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it if they like historical, atmospheric novels about vampires.

I enjoyed the original, but this book seems to take forever that I would put it down and forget to pick it up again. It took me nine months to muster through this because I was more or less intrigued. It needed a good editor and probably in epistolary form because it just didn't work like the original.

Aterradora.
