This is the first Sri Lankan author that I have read, and the novel is also set in Sri Lanka. It has been compared to "Crazy Rich Asians" --an apt comparison! I enjoyed this wedding themed mystery/thriller--even though I could not find a character I really liked. Be prepared for a slow start that blooms into action just before the middle of the book. In the meantime, the author catches the readers up on customs, scenery, and history of Sri Lanka that I found very interesting. The twisty clues will keep you guessing, as they did me. The wrap-up is amazing --- don't miss this one.

This book was incredible it was a fun fast paced book with a huge twist that I just could not get over I loved it and I suggest it to everyone.

The plot was okay. I liked that the chapters switched between regular style and interview style.

But good grief... I hated the main character. Actually, I didn't like any of the characters. That makes it hard to enjoy a book. I was so uninvested in them that I didn't even care about any twists or reveals.

DNF pg 2. Could immediately tell I would not jive with the writing in this one.
dark mysterious medium-paced

This was mediocre for me. The plot was predictable and the first half of the book dragged on. I think this book would have been better if it was written truly in 2 parts, from each of the main characters’ POV. Being able to view the same events from both sides would have been more interesting, but Kaavi’s part was super fast.

Once again, I enjoyed the perspective that Amanada Jayatissa brings to her novels. We get a wonderful glimpse at Sri Lanken culture and traditions, especially the preparations and intricacies of a Sri Lanken wedding in a privileged family.

But this is not just any wedding. It's a wedding that must be stopped. The only problem is, the one who can stop it has been "uninvited".

Amaya innocently believes she has been invited to her former best friend's wedding to her ex-boyfriend. Is she just jealous, or is something darker going on here? She's determined to stop the wedding of Kaavi and Spencer, and now that she's in Sri Lanka, she has to carefully navigate the world of aunties, gossip, and mortal tutting.

I loved Amaya's little asides, imagining in her head what disaster she would like to see befall someone who has slighted her (imagined or otherwise). I also liked how she compulsively and superstitiously checked time to see if it was a good sign before proceeding (because I think, subconsciously, I do that ;-)

Although it took a while to get to all of the secrets that EVERYONE was hiding I did not guess the ending and I loved the twists and turns the story took to get there.

Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for an advance reader's copy of another great book from Amanda Jayatissa!

Fun premise and setting, but weird pacing and flubbed ending

“Because if Kaavi’s announcement proved anything, it was that it didn’t matter if you grew up with someone or never saw their face; people still have a way of pulling the rug out from under you.”
