5 Stars! Yeah, I said it. So what? I know most of you hated the 4th book and rendered it trash compared to the first 3; but do you think GRRM cares? No. You all hated that he killed off main characters faster than a stripper removing clothing at a bachelors party; but GRRM didn't care then, either. I agree, I don't care what you think; this is my review; short and sweet as always.
Mr. Martin gives such moral and emotional depth to these characters, that you have no idea who to love, who to hate, when to offer sympathy, a tear or cheers. Each character is so flawed and utterly 'human'; that you have no choice but to find some place in your readers heart for them. I mean, we all kind of felt sorry for The Hound at the end of book 3... come on, admit it. I did say 'kind of...'
Anyway, the tale that is woven before us like an intricate web, is bitter, cold and damp like wet socks. It is also bloody and full of the hangman's noose....swingin.'
Winter is coming. Can you feel the bitterness of judgement? Can you feel the tears of sorrow and of revenge? Can you feel the loss?
Winter is coming and it will be savage and cold; but there will be fire. The fire will bring forth blood and revenge and will reap just rewards. I fear for them all.
Winter is coming and it is coming on a dragon's wing.

“I don't want to have a dozen sons," she had told him, appalled. "I want to have adventures"
I much preferred this book this time around!
The first time I read it, it took me YEARS to get through, I couldn't understand how the pacing had changed so drastically and why it was so Lannister focused. Which actually makes sense given that it takes place in the aftermath of the War of the Five Kings (I now know that the next book would be set over the same amount of time, filling in the chapters of the characters missing from this book...I'm not sure if that was the best way to go about it but we take what we're given, I guess)
Although it's mush slower and more diplomatic than the previous books in the series, it is no less treacherous. It is still full of political intrigue, betrayal, dark goings on and sneaky whispers.
We also get to see HUGE character development in Arya and Samwell.
Honestly one of the best series I have ever read and it really does hold up.

Still good. Sometimes hard to shake the impression that nothing is happening, but Martin often cleverly slips events in through the gaps between chapters to provide the sense of a wider world in which portentous events are underway. Also has what seems an increasing tendency to get bogged down in heraldry; some peopl build worlds by creating new languages, to each his own. The fact that this book, devoid of at least 2-3 of Westeros' most popular figures, did not result in wide spread fan mutiny certainly speaks to the enduring, grisly, gritty charms of Martin's world.

Absolutely stunning.
Beautiful.
I am trying to find the words to describe how much I love this book.
I’m not sure I can.

I have read good reviews of this book and don't feel a particular need to emulate. It is Fire and Ice on standby I guess. The progression of the story, which was always slow when it wasn't ridiculously fast by skipping crucial events has diminished to a suggestion. If you have come this far, however, you are, like me, likely to plod on.
