I cheated a little and listened to this book while in the car. It's the first time I had done that, but what an efficient way to read! I finished it in less than 2 days. Maybe I spend too much time in my car..

Anyway, this book did lend itself to that. I enjoyed hearing her voice. She has a very eloquent way of expressing herself and talking. She has had some interesting life experiences. Some of these essays were actually quite funny, and I wasn't really expecting that. I loved the story of when she walked on the rug in her guest's house.

I read this for book club, and I am glad they picked this title and that I participated; I probably would not have picked it up if it weren't for that.

This was a beautiful, uplifting memoir that takes the form of "lessons" Angelou wants to impart to her daughters--basically all women everywhere. The anecdotes and stories she tells about her own life are interesting enough to carry the book without the added wisdom she inserts. But that reflection on her life experiences is what really takes this memoir to the next level--it's not just about Maya Angelou. It's about women.
